Sugar
Both have mahogany neck thru design. Do they sound similar at all?
crunchee
I have a 1st Gen 1985 Hamer USA Cruisebass, and it (and all other 1st Gen Cruisebasses I've encountered) have a set (glued-in) three-piece mahogany neck. 2nd Gen Cruise Basses (notice the change in spelling) have bolt-on necks. 2nd Gen Cruise Bass necks are also maple, not mahogany. I've never owned a 2nd Gen Cruise Bass or a Gibson Thunderbird, so I couldn't compare them.

slingblader
Realistically, you're going to hear far more differences from the pickups than you will the wood or the construction.
