Gentle on My Mind

Recommended Posts

Any opportunity to watch an old Glen clip is time well spent.

You know, Roy Clark doesn't exactly look to be his normal buoyant, jovial self in that video.  I suspect that the headstock on that Heritage he's holding is making him a bit nauseous.

Same here, by a smidge.  But, on the other hand, Glen's version made it possible for John to buy and captain the Julia Belle Swain.  My mom and I both took a ride on it.  That was an experience I won't soon forget.

I love the looks on the faces of some very talented people, all looking at Glenn as if they are thinking, "Who IS this guy?"

I laughed so hard when this aired, at which time Roy Clark was still alive.

Most people don't know that Glen Campbell wasn't just a great singer and picker, he was also a country hippie, caught up in the new ideas in the mid-60's. A total believer in pointing out injustice and offering ideas to resolve the problems. He played "Try a Little Kindness" live a lot. Also, "He's Not Heavy, He's My Brother".  He's a fucking hero, man. My hero, anyway.

Try A little Kindness
Written by Austin, Sapaugh

If you see your brother standing by the road
With a heavy load from the seeds he sowed
And if you see your sister falling by the way
Just stop and say, "You're going the wrong way"
You've got to try a little kindness
Yes, show a little kindness
Just shine your light for everyone to see
And if you try a little kindness
Then you'll overlook the blindness
Of narrow-minded people on the narrow-minded streets
Don't walk around the down and out
Lend a helping hand instead of doubt
And the kindness that you show every day
Will help someone along their way
You got to try a little kindness
Yes, show a little kindness
Just shine your light for everyone to see
And if you try a little kindness
Then you'll overlook the blindness
Of narrow-minded people on the narrow-minded streets
You got to try a little kindness
Yes, show a little kindness
Just shine your light for everyone to see
And if you try a little kindness
Then you'll overlook the blindness
Of narrow-minded people on the narrow-minded streets

Very disappointed in y'all for ignoring the most revered version of all. 🙃

His voice sounds like a mix of Campbell and John Hartford.  In any event it's a crapload better than anything Shatner might do the song.
