Anybody like P90s?

Recommended Posts

Sometimes (often) I am an idiot - posted originally in FS and may have caused some arrhythmias.

Just was feeling happy and lucky to own and play these guitars.  Sharin some P90 goodness/porn.

BCR Jr, N90, Special

The MIII would not fit on the wee rug!  And these three kinda make a good wraparound trio, I think.

Nope, hate 'em.  OK, I'm a fan.  The '64 SG Jr (thanx, Rodi) and the BCR Jr (thanx, Kiz) are mine.  The white Hamer is not.  I wish I would have snagged it when it was for sale here a few years back.

Can't live without them. Always need to have a guitar or two with some good P90s. My first REAL guitar had P90s. Can't ever forget that sound and feel.

I really like the Lollar/TysonTone P-90 combination in my Partscaster Cabronita (see the 'pastel'/'Easter Egg' thread) and I definitely wouldn't mind getting another guitar just like it, but I wouldn't necessarily say I like it only for the P-90s.  I haven't had that much exposure to P-90's that I'm aware of, or at least not in a way where I could instantly identify pickups as P-90's, with the possible exception of the presence of 50/60 Hz hum.  Yeah, somebody's gonna bring up early Freddie King, Missisippi Queen, or Revolver-era Beatles, but could the same tunes be done with guitars that don't have P-90's?  And how would you know?

As far as I can tell and from what I've heard before with my own ears, P-90s remind me of PAF-style HBs with a little more sonic presence because it's a single coil...and that not all P-90s are created equal.  Last year I had a recent Fender Mustang 90 with factory Fender P-90 type PUs, and I wasn't impressed with those...though the fact that those PUs pretty much sounded the same regardless of which PU was selected probably had something to do with that more than anything.  And no, that guitar didn't sound the same as my Partscaster Cabronita.  But like I said, maybe I just need more exposure to them.

Dibs on the N90.  But I'll need a little notice so I can hide the bodies.

I've got my '01 Gibson LP Jr. which is an amazing sounding guitar:

My '63 SES-330 has the hottest P-90's I've EVER played on any guitar.

This guitar refuses to play clean sparkly music.

All it wants to do is play distorted rock tones.

I think #13 was my last P-90 guitar. Glad to see you cleaned off the dust I included in the sale.

Come to think of it, I even had a P-90 guitar routed for 'buckers recently.

I love P90's, and stuck with them throughout the run of the last band. The 2001 LP Jr, I sold on the board was a work horse of a guitar and never let me down. Currently I find myself with no True P90 Guitars and that may just have to be rectified.

This is pure evil right here

Kinda thought the whole point of P90s is noise

dirty, rough around the edges, noisy and crass.

no?

Yes, and no. There is really only one company I would consider to have created noiseless P90s and other pickups that don't lose something along with the noise

Kinman.

ATM, a Vanguard and a 64 SG Junior.  I've had scads, mostly Hamers.  One of the "everybody needs at least one" red P-90 Specials I converted to Eclipse Firebird pickups 'cuz grab and go, not knowing what I might walk into.  Oh, and noise.
