Blocking Floyd for dive only

Travis

Question

Posted

Ok, gents, I’ve been thinking about this for a while and it’s time. I’m going to block the Floyd on my Charvel for dive only. Given the route, wondering if I should use wood in the cavity or the stack of pennies method (5 pennies, I measured...)

Or, are there any other methods y’all have used that work best, offer the optimal vibrational transfer for tonal maximization and preserving the acoustic voice....  🧐

I'd cut a wedge shaped block of wood "wider than the block" touching 3 sides "but not necessary" & the block than gently tap into place... than you can always remove it easily if you decide that you don't like it...

Oops.. scratch that, I was thinking "hardtail mod" 🤣

Drop a piece of wood right there with proper thickness so that your trem rest on top keeping your current Action height while Maximising tone and sustainMzkJLo5.jpg

Trem Stop device sits right in the middle and is perfect for this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141895453945 I've used this many times on client guitars. There are other similar devices probably closer to you...

Another way is to cut a piece of wood and affix it to the BIG block (neck-side) using double-sided sticky tape: I've done this on a couple of PRS's recently where the client wanted 'dive only' tremolo's but also wanted the option to reverse the mod...

I used a block of walnut (because it was handy) and a drop of thick CA (superglue) to block one of mine. The CA holds it secure, but a quick tap will knock it loose easily if you want to go back.

This is the way to do it.  Super easy and done/undone in a minute or two.

Wow - nice "Big" block. I used the Tremol-No for years -- I find it a bit temperamental but it has dive only modes as well.
