Getting rid of VHS tapes?

Recommended Posts

Hey Fellas,

I have a bunch of VHS tapes that I want to donate, but no place will take them, not even good will.

Concert videos (Pink Floyd, to Janes Addiction, to Jimi Hendrix, to Debashish Bhattacharya, etc), instructional tapes (all styles, including NGW ones still in plastic), and assorted stuff.

Does anybody know of a library or organization that accepts VHS donations?

I found out that if i “recycle” them, they just go in a landfill.

TIA

I think Goodwill and Savers have been pretty good about taking VHS... the bootlegs might be a different

story...   Goodwill was absolutely amazing with the stuff they would take...  especially if you have

a parents house to help declutter...

The only thing about a free craigslist or facebook ad...  a friend who did one told me... that

free is often not good enough,  they start negotiating delivery with you...   way too much effort.

I dealt with this five or six years ago. Like you, I didn't like the idea of the tapes going to a landfill. At this point, the VHS technology is so dated that, even if the content is worthy, few people will have access to a VHS player to be able to enjoy it. And unless, it's something really rare, digitized versions are most likely available.

Ultimately, I sent my tapes to the only place that seems to actually recycle the material as opposed to send it to a landfill: GreenDisk.

The downside is that you have to pay for them to take it. I think I paid $20 or so to send two bankers boxes full of VHS tapes.

Here's another link that you may have seen with a few other options.

Good luck!

Try getting rid of hundreds of cassettes with old time radio shows.  GreenDisk was discovered the same way for the same reason.

Magnetic tape does not recycle.

I put batches of tapes on eBay and waited.  Someone bought them for next to nothing and paid media mail shipping.
