Gibson SG JR Thought's New Vs Old

Dutchman

Recommended Posts

I ran into an old friend that I would borrow a SG Jr from in high school. I think his was a late 60's era.

I loved playing that guitar, so now I think I need one. How are the new ones in comparison? There no music stores around here that have one so I'm looking to those who know!!!

Anyone have one or played one??

  • Dutchman changed the title to Gibson SG JR Thought's New Vs Old

The recent Gibsons have been very consistent, quality-wise. You probably cannot go wrong with one from the last 10yrs, or so.

Also, don't discount Japan repros like Edwards, Greco, Burny, etc. Those can be found relatively cheap and can be killer guitars.

I played an SG Jr for about 15 minutes at Sweetwater last year. Not enough time to put it thru its paces but enough to realize that it rocked. Don’t remember the fit and finish detail but I remember it playing pretty well. So, no glaring issues like poorly cut nut, uneven frets or the like. Thought it was a cool little guitar and I wouldn’t mind banging one around for a while. The playing position was a bit odd for me being so far left biased. Not a deal breaker, tho.

They are very nice... the two I owned played well, super light and sound nice.  the wrap adds a little bit of zing to them...

They are something like $1399 with ohsc, new,   that's a pretty fair price given that in a normal market they'd

be discounting off that...     The Original series SG Junior,  LP Junior and Special are IMHO the best values in the

Gibson line...  hope this isn't blasphemy but I like them all better than a 90's Hamer P-90 special (the stop tail and

tunamatic ones).

I was going to start an SG thread myself but @Dutchman beat me to it. I just absconded with a guitar from my bro in-law: It's a MIJ 2004 Epiphone SG 'Elitist', great feeling neck, center seam ribbon mahogany body, frets OVER the neck binding. Tell me that the body doesn't look exactly like a '61! The reason I haven't strung it up is that the glue has failed on a few of the genuine MOP inlays (and they're loose). Curious to hear how the USA made pickups sound. Chrome Grovers, too!

These were made at the Fugi-gen factory. You see some Les Pauls and Casinos for sale from this series but not much else.

What is the current best practice to prevent neck dive on the ol' SG -- Wide suede strap (with a dive belt weight hanging off the butt end of the guitar)?

I'm still in a holding pattern after my recent amp purchases, BUT I am looking at purchasing a new SG Junior or LP Junior. After playing the new ones, I have to say that play and sound pretty fantastic. If they made a new white SG Special it would definitely break me, I would have to buy one.

The new Black LP Juniors look fantastic as well.

I don’t know if old ones are usually better or not, but my mutt ‘63 is the best sounding guitar I’ve ever had.

The white one is sweet! Was 2nd owner of a VG+ red ‘61 SG Jr. @ 1982, like an ID.I.OT I let ‘er go a year later. Before that had a ‘69 large pickguard STD in Walnut! Skinny ass neck but it stayed in tune. Got rid of it, too, wish I’d pirated the Pat. No. pickups outta that one.

If you look at the neck joints on ‘60’s SGs it seems as if Gibson tried something different on each guitar, there’s even variation within a single year. BEWARE THE RUBBER NECK JOINT!

Dan’s SG Junior is the best thing on That Pedal Show.

I also really like that Huber he has, but he hardly ever uses it.

‘Nother option is a ‘60’s Melody Maker, SG shape or earlier, tho people want $$$ for them now, too.

I had a double cut ‘61 at one point — awesome fat neck, reminded me of the Hamer Jr.  I dumped an original Gibson Dirty Finger in there — Stand Back!

ETA: @Dutchman: Just buy the BCR Junior that’s currently for sale and be done with it!

I'm cruel like that. It was touted as being a special and have that extra 10%. I went down to Killer Vintage in St. Louis to by a Marshall Cab and play the SG while checking out some cabs. The neck was perfect it was sonically loud as hell. I gave it back, he handed me a 65 SG Jr. and although it was nice, I immediately new I could not leave without the 64. The Marshall tripped the vintage switch in me, but the SG was pure magic.

I play my tele 95% of the time and to be able to pull out the 64 and not have to change anything but get a fatter tone is worth it. I plugged it in tonight into my Dr Z Z28 with 2x10 speakers and the slide tones were killer!

I got to hold that one yesterday.  What a plank of wood!
I'll be down in the 4-3-2-1 Club tomorrow putting the new speaker cab through its paces.  Thanks Shawn!

Thank you, I knew where that one need to be and I finally made a dent in my inventory. Just in time to buy more stuff. 😉

I wish my 64 looked that good.  And (sometimes) that I still lived in St. Louis.
