Equalizer? Compressor? Delay?

If I'm playing country a compessor is a must have to get the twang. Otherwise my signal chain is comp, light OD, cranked OD, phaser, delay, reverb, and booster. I think booster's are super duper!!! Hit that 1st tube HARD!!! All into whatever old school black faced fender I feel needs to have the cobs blown out of it!! This week it's the AA864 Bassman, last week a 64 Bandmaster. They do sound and respond diferently!

I just picked up an SP Compressor from Santellavision. Where are people putting a compressor in their signal path? Read suggestions saying in the front, before distortion.  Our other guitar player puts his at the end, likes the sustain he gets all the time.

At the end could raise the noise floor when gain pedals are on. At the front, could make the response to the distortion pedals different with regards to you picking intensity.

I will try both ways. Also want to add a plain boost at the end for solos. My little Boogie has a built it Solo boost but not the MKIIA.

Damn you, HFC. I used to be happy with no pedals.

The dirt pedals have there own compression. I like comp before dirt followed by rev/delay then boost. That's just me tho... I'm experimenting with a boost at the front end too, I use that for single coils and turn it off for buckers. The jury's still out on that one...

I was just thinking about getting a compression pedal so this thread is right on time.  Want something good but not overly expensive.

Any one recommend a good but lower price octaver?

I use them all as needed when recording. Live, I only use a compressor with my 12 string Tele.

I just picked up a Maxon 6 band eq. I likely will only use it with my Newport ….the spruce top needs it. But it is a tone-shaping tool that I’ll use as needed, if needed. Sometime the tweed Champ needs some brightness and the eq will be perfect for that application.

If I am playing the Vac I’ll use a tiny bit of the amp reverb for some sugar, especially on the cleanish side of things.

Other amps get an echo. I just picked up a TRex Replicator D’luxe real deal tape echo. Still figuring it out but it sounds so freaking awesome. Sometimes a Boss Waza DM2 analog delay and the church board has a Lovepedal Echophonic trails which will stay there. But the TRex tape echo is a game changer.

Funny Keith quote cause he was heavily into an early green MXR delay in the late 70s early 80s.

Most of the time I am straight in, but the tape echo may change that and I do love a treble booster or another booster in front of the amp…oh, all my effects when used are in front.

Fuzz when I want fuzz. I have sold most ODs but kept what works best for me when I want that sound.

Wampler Ego Mini is a good comp.  Whatever you choose, I'd recommend getting something that can blend your dry signal and the compressed signal; really makes them more versatile.

I keep it and the front, though after an EP boost that I'm mostly running as an always on preamp.

I go into a Wah -> Fuzz -> Buffer -> Tuner -> EP Boost -> Wampler Comp

It definitely takes some touch off and makes the volume knob less effective for cleaning things up. However, I really only use it for country tunes, so I'm already pretty clean. I'll boost after.

As a couple have noted, you're getting compression from any dirt you're throwing in the chain, so it's kinda doubling up after, along with anything else in the signal by that point. I don't know that it's really going to give you that much touch back, but it will make your rig noisy as hell.

I played with the SP Compressor last night and prefer it first, right after the tuner and before dirt pedals. Too much noise at the end to suit me.  I also prefer low compression with the Tele. Mid and high compression, I can really hear it take hold at the attack. Maybe a fancier device might yield adjustment for what I hear. I did play with the internal DIP switches.

so far -

Polytune 3 -> SP Compressor -> Valve Reamer -> Black Magic Zen Drive II -> Boss Super Chorus -> TC Choka tremolo.  And will take it from their pre to an MXR Micro Amp.

I only use one dirt pedal at a time, enough for me. I also have dirt channels in both amps I use.  A reverb might be nice for my MKIIA since it lacks that. Then I consider rack time effects, starts getting to be a lot to manage live.  However, I could do this setup and it would sound great -

Pedal chain as above -> SMS Revelation Preamp -> MidiVerb and ADA TFX4 (series or parallel) -> MKIIA power amp.

I thought you used the Catalinbread Belle Epoch? Have you sold it? (Or do I remember it wrong)

For solo acoustic gigs, I use sparing amounts of compression and delay carefully tweaked  by my 7 band EQ depending on the atrocity of the venues acoustics. I use those because the sound is like angels having sex.

Like Mark, I use a compressor religiously with my 12 strings (Tele, Newport 12, Hamer Californian 12 string neck).  It really makes a difference - very noticeable.

I usually use the JangleBox I've had for 20 years or so, but also have an MXR SuperComp, Keeley, NoiseKickFX and BOSS compressors that see less action.  Maybe more with a Tele and my Gretsch.

I think I need to sell some damned pedals...

I did..,I sold it to @RobBwhen I went fully down the Lovepedal hole….now that I am out, I wanted a real tape echo…and the TRex is baller.

My compressor for the 12 is a Chicago Stompworks Mr Squeezy… an Armstrong Orange Squeezer clone. Simple, one knob, and effective.

Yessir. Great pedal. Best of the compact Echoplex clones for my ears. It never sounds muddy (unless you want that), sounds very analog for a digital pedal.

Yeah, then I remembered correctly. You were so enthusiatic about it. I actually had your review in mind when I bought a used one last week. I like it so far. The inside gain control knob is hard to dial in. I think the Belle Epoch sounds best with the gain set pretty much at plus minus zero. No gain added, but not lower than the input signal. At zero the pedal loses all it's balls. And with the gain higher it gets slightly muddy and loses to much highs and bite.

I have it in True Bypass mode, if I want to use it as a boost only then I just turn down the delay level knob to zero.

The Belle is great. I left mine buffered as I wanted the preamp always on when the pedal was plugged in…I had the internal gain up just a touch for a little grit. I loved the preamp tone as much as the actual echos…That internal gain control will take it all the way to fuzz…an Easter egg from Cbread. I found it to be a little dark overall,  it it would work great with my current and final amps. But I am so digging the actual tape echo from TRex.

That T-rex echo sounds great in clips I've heard. I missed a huge sale on those little over a year ago. Less than half price. Bummer. The Belle's preamp works absolutely great with taming the high treble with my Newport w. Phat Cats. It sounds cool with all guitar. But when I need it I just turn down the delay vol knob to zero. I have not yet tried it out with my full rig at our rehersal place. So still curious how it will sound at full blast.

Anyone else for a Keeley Compressor Plus?

I use one on my solo looper wine bar type gigs. This one place I play is a loud room, almost too loud for live music, so I put a small amp on a tripod right behind my head and play very quiet; the comp helps thicken the tone and sustain so its not all anemic and plinky.
