Nazareth last night

Could you do anything better on a Monday evening than digging into good ol' scottish rock. A friend of mine and I went to the local club to see Nazareth yesterday. The venue had been filled almost complete. The are continuously touring these days still. For the most part I try to see them annually. I don't like the guitar playing really. Jimmy Murrison plays some kind of finger style where sometimes I'm having the impression he's got stiff fingers. His playing appears not very sophisticated to my ears. Maybe it is just me. Pete Agnew still rocks the bass. I wonder how he's capable to still wear the heavy Aria bass in his age. His son Lee lays a solid ground on the drums. No fashion, rather solid as a rock. Carl sentence managed to adopt to Dan McCafferty's voice. Not as rough, but coming closer every year.

I have everything from the first album through the next to last album with maybe one or two from the last 25 years missing.

Nazareth stopped doing USA shows, but still makes it to Canada now and then.

Goofing around with my guitar a few years ago I surprised myself with how many Nazareth riffs and licks I knew.

Manny Charlton hated Malice In Wonderland, but I love that album.  I got Zal Cleminson's autograph when they toured to support that album.

I’m going to defer to Manny on Malice in Wonderland. That’s when Jeff Baxter took over as producer for Nazareth. Big difference in sound from the previous No Mean City and the other Nazareth albums. I think he neutered the band and did it again with the next one he produced. Very disappointed in those 2 releases. I was glad when Nazareth went to a two guitar band and Zal is a very good player. When I first saw Nazareth live in the early days with just Manny it was a bit of a letdown  as the recordings were definitely heavy on rhythm and lead guitar being played together. Zal fixed that issue.

Nah, any band changing members at some point are turning into their own tribute band. Especially, when they stopped recording and go stuck in heritage maintenance. At least Nazareth never stopped living at this point.

I got to see them years ago and hang out on the bus for a while.  Darrell Sweet, their original drummer who was with them that night, died just a couple of weeks later.  That's him leaning down with his arm around me and Dan peeking in on the right side.

I don't think Manny liked Baxter's "ear"...

You are right. When I read Steve’s post saying Manny did not like Malice in Wonderland I did some googling. Seems Baxter was not the band’s first choice for producer. Supposedly Manny told him and the band I’m not playing this crap. Baxter supposedly was going to bring in another player which didn’t help the situation. How Baxter got called back for the next album I don’t know. Those two albums he produced really took the edge away from previous Nazareth albums. They may have sounded lush and more sophisticated and if IIRC there probably was a minor hit off them, but the piss and vinegar was gone.

The single and video (pre MTV) was Holiday, not really a rocker.

Big Boy and Heart's Grown Cold were Zal Cleminson songs that he brought to the table.  Big Boy was a rocker.  Listen to the live version on Snaz.

Big Dogz and Rock 'n' Roll Telephone were Dan's last two albums, and they sounded like a rock band.  They were not the same, but those albums are good.  They are the last albums I bought.

I was a big fan of Nazareth back in the day. Those early records like Loud n' Proud and HOTD were amazing. Still have my concert ticket stub from seeing them play at Maple Leaf Gardens in the early 80's. Rose Tattoo opened, Nazareth (2nd), and Aerosmith headlined. Sadly, this was the period where Joe Perry was off doing his JPP thing and Jimmy Crespo had taken his place.

Got to say there is nothing wrong with the Tattooed on my Brain album from a couple years back. Real solid release. There latest from 2022 is so so.
