Growing Dylan obsession

Hi guys,

So, any Dylan fans on the board? I've been listening to him like crazy lately. Right now, I'm in his religious phase, specifically Slow Train Coming. Mark Knopfler plays some great stuff on that record! I also have Infidels, which was supposedly his return to secular stuff, but it still has some biblical imagery on it.

Overall though, I'd say my favourite Dylan album might be John Wesley Harding, man those songs pack a punch. It's interesting, because the guitar is pretty simple, but boy, if you listen to the basslines and drums, they are playing some intricate stuff.

I'd like to start getting into some of the bootleg stuff. Dylan just has so much material to chose from, it's like falling in an ocean.

The now-official Royal Albert Hall Concert (The Bootleg Series, Vol. 4: Bob Dylan Live, 1966) is stunning. I have a boot from 84 where he plays a tune called I and I. Great stuff. He also did a great version of Tangled Up in Blue. (Rome, Italy June 19, 1984 SQ's not great, but it is a soundboard. Maybe a lower generation copy will/has turned up.) On those tours Mick Taylor (ex-Rolling Stones) played guitar and Ian McLagan (ex-Faces) was on organ. Ian has some good stories in his book, All the Rage.

P.S. If you like Bob covers The 30th Anniversary Concert is another excellent choice.

Cool, thanks for the tips!

Love the Bobster.

For a long time one of my favorite albums was Desire, an oft-overlooked, but all the same great album. I like a lot of his new stuff as well. Heck, I like it all.

I like a lot of Dylan but don't have many of his recordings. I have Traveling Wilbury's vol. 1 and love his "Tweeter and the Monkey Man" from that. Also recently lucked into three boxes of vinyl records where I found a very good condition copy of Blood on the Tracks. Like that album, especially "Tangled Up in Blue" and "Simple Twist of Fate."

Edited to add:

Oh yeah I just remembered I have a gold edition CD of Highway 61 Revisited and like that through and through.

"Positively 4th Street" and "Like a Rolling Stone" charted when I was 13-14 and they've been favorites ever since.

I HATED Dylan for 40 years. About 5 years ago Robyn Hitchcock did an album of Dylan covers, and it started to open me up to him. Now I have a large Dylan collection. My favorite is Love and Theft.

I'm still partial to the first Dylan record I bought in the '60s, which was "Highway 61 Revisited".

Like a Rolling Stone

Tombstone Blues

Ballad of a Thin Man

Queen Jane Approximately

Highway 61 Revisited

Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues

Desolation Row

First saw Dylan in the Winter of '73 in Madison Square Garden and last saw him in the Summer of '05 in Lancaster, PA.

I saw that same tour, with The Band. February 1974 at the Oakland Coliseum. Like A Rolling Stone and Forever Young still stand out in my mind.

One of my old bands used to open up with "If You Gotta Go, Go Now".

"But if you got to go

It’s all right

But if you got to go, go now

Or else you gotta stay all night"
