Hamer Tennon

I was surprised to see such a massive tennon when I opened up the pickup cavity. Here are a couple shots of what I found. And a 57 Reissue Les Paul neck tennon for comparison.

Nice pics, Cramer. I suppose we could debate all day about how it affects tone, but the bigger tenon definitely is a sturdier design. I feel a lot better doing the "neck-bending" trick on a Hamer.

BTW, there was a recent thread re: the "dovetail" design on the tenon. Can you tell if the tenon gets wider towards the end?

Go to the Hamer Open House and you'll see a very nice demonstration of the difference between the Gibby and Hamer methods. The joint on the Hamer is so tight you can lift the guitar by the neck without the neck being glued in.

HaHa...Very good point!

I certainly do notice a difference in the sustain and overall resonance of a Les Paul vs. a Hamer Studio, but I could never say one is better than the other. That's just a matter of personal preference.

Mike,

The tennon looks like it has a slight dovetail, but its subtle.

here's the joint of an 87 Cruise bass...

Great pictures guys! The tennon on that Hamer is just a straight extension of the neck...no flanged edge. Very nice.

Hamer purposely as an oversized neck tenon and an undersized pocket so that when the neck is fitted by hand it has maximum contact on all sides. Davd E is correct in that it is very impressive to see a neck hand fitted in a body without glue and the given a hard shake. BTW nice photos

The Hamer tenon looks very impressive next to, say, those photos of the Heritage neck tenons posted (here?) a while back...

Due to the body designs, shouldn't the Hamer be bigger? The LP has a lot of body surrounding the neck. The Hamer does not.

Also keep in mind that the LP necks butts up against the body, and the Hamer neck fits into the body. Gibson occasionally uses shims in their neck pockets, too.
