so I'm backing having a bass that for me at least,is how a bass should feel. I'm loving the cherry finish over mahogany; it's the same as my first ever electric guitar - a '76 reissue Gibson Explorer - so that was an unexpected bit of nostalgia!

the neck is perfect, and I can see why many bassists wouldn't like the tight string spacing of these 5-string Cruise basses. But I approach the bass the way I approach fingerstyle/classical guitar. It just feels better to have guitar-like string spacing.

big shout out to bcsride for hooking me up with this fine instrument!!

the other acquisition is a Turkish baglama. One recent insomniated night, I remembered a conversation I had in college with someone involved with the newly founded Boston Microtonal Society. He explained what they were doing and lost me within half a sentence. I started youtubing and yeah, I still don't get the theory but I figured the baglama would be the perfect way for a guitarist to start trying to dabble with microtones. It sounds bitchin', with the exotic string buzz and all /emoticons/default_smile.png

a pretty good Black Friday, for someone stuck working from home. Not that I'd want to brave the throngs of people at the mall anyways.

this is how a baglama is supposed to sound:

dealing with these quarter tones (?) and how to incorporate them into a melody is going to be an interesting challenge and will surely open my ears. suffice it to say that I have zero feel for it now /emoticons/default_tongue.png

I've been enjoying some simple fingerpicking though, sticking to the normal (12-tone) frets.

the bass is FUCKING AWESOME. that is all /emoticons/default_smile.png

Are the frets on the Baglama adjustable? Man o' man that would drive me bat-$#!* crazy because I'd have to mess with them and I'd NEVER get them back in the right spots /emoticons/default_laugh.png

That's a crazy instrument, but as with most, very cool in the hands of those who can play it.

I think in that part of the world they're using (a) different scale(s) than

our traditional ones - especially in their vocal music.

And so then I suppose they tune /make/ their instruments that way.

To them - I guess - that is the NORMAL notes..
