PAF Discussion

Jaye - FLE #12 I bought from Chris Hall. It's kinda tobacco burst, with a lightly burnt orange in the middle and darker brown edges/highlighting. Stop tail with a huge neck shape. I haven't grown attached to it yet, although I love the neck shape and finish. I bought other gear recently and could use the money from a sale. Plus, I really don't want to mod a FLE guitar.

A recent review listed SD Antiquities, Seth Lovers, and 59s as getting you into Vintage PAF territory. I like the 59s in my Monaco Elite Mahogany.

I am looking for pickups sugestions that are $100 or less. The Gib$ons , Dimarzio's, Duncans type price range.
Screw that. Your old lady should buy you the set of your choice in exchange for all that Sol beer you brought her.

C'mon EVERYBODY knows that only a REAL PAF is worth a shit and even more so if its......................afuhgitit.

Check out some used Fralins. I've only heard Holmes pu's in one guitar(Lonnie Mack Signature V) which just happens to be the BEST sounding guitar I've( and a few others agree with me too) ever heard. I've heard good things about DiMarzio's Virtual PAF too.

That's a nice one!

Shlebotniks, maybe Poe?
He stopped making them, and they have gone through the roof in price. The last set I saw for sale went for about $900. I have a whole mess of them(about 60-70)...and they aren't going anywhere.

Smokin Joe Shablotnik is a great guy, but weird. I am not sure if he will wind again due to health reasons. He winds his pups by hand and he recently had to have Tommy John surgery. Last year he had rotator cuff surgery. Sad story actually.
this is bullshit right? Shlabotniks? wasnt that Charlie Browns baseball hero?

I had a pair of the Shablotnik Sutters from when his shop was in St. Louis, and I thought they sucked.

Every time I'd get them dialed in for a second all of a sudden the bottom would drop right out of my tone. Weird. Sold 'em for nearly squatole...

That is some funny shit you guys are throwing. /emoticons/default_tongue.png/emoticons/default_ohmy.png

DiMarzio Virtual PAF in the neck, and the new Virtual PAF Hot in the bridge (or just two Virtual PAFs, it's up to you). 59's are nice too, but I really dig the Virtual PAFs.

Hey PAF aficiandos,

I used to use the Dimarzio PAF Pro guitar pickups in my '93 Ibanez RG-570 which I thought was a cool set of pickups. I have the Gibson Burstbucker Pro guitar pickups in my '95 Hamer USA Archtop Sunburst (listed as a Studio on the serial database. Why?). That's a very nice pickup and I got those at $100.00 each. I use a pair of EMG 85 pickups on my '96 Les Paul Custom. I think of those as PAF on steroids. Don't be hating on EMG pickups now!! /emoticons/default_tongue.png

Guitar George

I have a WCR Crossroads bridge and a Duncan Antiquity in the neck of my Gibson SG. I think the WCR is fine, but I love the Antiquity. This is the third guitar I have had the Antiquity in and it just always sounds great to me. I bought it a couple years ago used for $80. The Antiquities are very under rated. I think the Antiquites are much better than the Seth's, or the 59's. I was a little disappointed with the WCR. I was going for something much better, since it cost more money and it has gotten great reviews, but I ended up with something on par with the Antiquity. Not bad by any means, but not better than the Antiquity to my ears. Next time around, I will be buying more Antiquites instead of any more WCR's.

+1 on the DiMarzio Virtual Vintage PAF's. As I've said before, Tombo was on the end of a lot of ridicule when he bought them. We stopped laughing when he plugged in on stage. They are *the* sleeper on the market.

Check out http://www.highorderpickups.com/

The builder's name is Jeff Gay. Have corresponded with him on pickup specs to get the tone I want, and so far he seems to be a pretty alright guy. I haven't got any from him yet (will be doing so soon), but some folks really like his pickups.

And yeah, the price is right. A set for $105, including shipping. Build time is 4-6 weeks tho. WCR and Wolfetone are way faster, but also twice as much.

The closest I've ever heard to that PAF tone was a set of Duncan Antiquities in a 59 RI LP through a Marshall JMP, absolutely nailed that tone.

I have a pair of Shablotnik copies from the 50's, but I am keeping them so that they won't get passed of as real Shablotniks.

I had one Shablotnik RTB "round the basses" pickup in a Hondo, it sounded like a Hondo with a Shablotnik.

I just don't think I am cool enough for those.

Poe, I'll trade you some Shaggys for some, if you wanna....

Hell yes...I have been looking for a set of the Shaggys. What do you want...the Sutters, the Pigpens, or the Good Griefs? I have a few sets of them all...just let me know. /emoticons/default_tongue.png
