Recommended DVD's?

I like the questions about old album sides and such, so here I go.....

Do you have any particular recommendations for DVD's of live shows? Here are a couple I think are pretty cool...

Los Lonely Boys, Live in Austin (can you play a guitar or bass with one hand? these guys throw them in the air and catch them just right on the frets over and over. Plus they just jam.)

REM, Perfect Square. Killer show except for some "new stuff". Wish I was there.

Festival Express, this is the DVD of the Dead, Band, D&B, Sha Na Na, Janis, Buddy Guy, Burritos, etc, when they rode a train from Toronto to Calgary, stopping in various towns to play. 1970 was the year. Truely amazing sound quality, especially the jams on the train. Bear must have been taping it all.

These suck: Yes Live in Philly 1979 and Marshall Tucker Live from the Garden State 1981. I have a dissapointing Neville Brothers DVD, too.

Ok, what do you suggest?

Brian Wilson "Smile" video. Great music, performance, visuals and audio quality.

I also like the Alison Kraus and Union Station live DVD. The video is kind of low-rez, but it has an available DTS soundtrack and the sound quality is excellent.

I have a Doors DVD. It has a DTS soundtrack, but it's really pretty rough, both visually and sonically. Unless you're desperate for Doors archives I don't much recommend it.

+1 on

led zep dvd,

shadows of motown,

Frank Zappa - Does Humor Belong in Music?,

Rush - R30.

i'll add :

pantera 3- watch it go/vulgar videos/cowboys from hell,

spinal tap (reissue w/ deleted scenes),

ozzy - don't blame me,

the miles davis story.

santana's influences, w/ bola stete/gabor szabo/wes montgomery.

"The Return of Spinal Tap" - a taste of what the '92 Tour was about, but not nearly as funny as seeing it live. Still a good one.

Ditto for R30

I wish that there was a great Cheap Trick live video, but there really isn't a consistent one.

The Cure "In Orange" is still pretty cool, but although I can't remember the name of the later live one, it is the better of the two.

I can't believe that REM's other two concert films have been mentioned in this thread and this one hasn't: "Tourfilm". This is hands down the one concert movie I've watched over and over. It is way cool.

The first time I saw REM was during this tour (Document). Tourfilm was REM's first concert movie. What makes Tourfilm so unusual is that at the time, 99% of the time any band made a concert film they would just shoot one night's concert with multiple cameras. This made the film visually boring - you saw the same 7-8 camera angles over and over.

Tourfilm shoots a bunch of different nights throughout the entire tour. Some nights are shot in black and white, some in color. Michael Stipe's hair and attitude is different throughout. He looks crazy and angry some nights, other nights he's in a giddy mood. He really looks personally tormented and insane for some of the film. These days he's definitely a much happier person. Plus - the performances and song selection are top notch. Oh - and the audio mix is only in stereo, but the mix is awesome. At times it sounds like you are standing on stage with the band - other times it sounds like a big fat stereo concert mix.

Of course - you gotta like REM. Lots of people don't!

I hear what you're saying but I'd reccomend Music For Hangovers for the commentary track alone. Any of the boots from the 3 night stand shows are nice too...

I still dig Rattle and Hum - in all its pretentious glory.

Alice In Chains - MTV Unplugged

Green Day - Bullet In A Bible - although the hurky jerky camera worky gets annoying aftera while.

Pink Floyd -- Pulse

Allman Brothers -- Live at Great Woods (VHS not DVD version)

Dire Straits -- On The Night

SRV -- El Macombo

Robben Ford -- The Paris Concert

minor threat - at dc space, buff hall,9:30 club

iggy and the stooges - live in detroit

isis - clearing the eye

mastodon - the workhorse chronicles
