TDC: Brian Wilson

^^^This, vs. Stone and vs.a third ...but these types of posts or threads are going to increase in frequency.

In the lexicon of hype for show busness personalities, Brian Wilson fits the definition of "mad genius" perfectly.

"God must want him to stick around," a guitarist who had been in a touring band of Wilson's  said of Wilson's longevity and creativity. And that interview was about 20 years ago.

There were two versions of The Beach Boys touring. The most commonly seen group has Mike Love and Bruce Johnston. The other was Brian Wilson under his own name with Al Jardine. Some of the band members were the same. A friend tried to see Brian Wilson every time he was within a four hour drive. It had to do with recognizing where the true talent and creativity was behind The Beach Boys.

I only saw the Mike Love version. I wish I had seen Brian Wilson.

Always thought this was one of the most briliant tribute/"in-the-style-of" songs I've ever heard...and it's 22 years since it ws released

Man, this one really makes me feel my age. What an arranger. Willie G hit the nail square, "mad genius". RIP, and thanks for so many of the songs of my yute.

Mike Love's version of the band is like ordering Beach Boys tickets from Wish. It has some resemblance to the real thing...but the real thing it ain't.

Recommended reading THE NEAREST FARAWAY PLACE: Brian Wilson, The Beach Boys and the Southern California Experience by Timothy.White. Published in 1994. Found a remanded OOP copy in a Dollar General for two bucks many years ago, and it's still in my office library.

and don't overlook the rest of that album, that's a good one

My jazz guitar buddy (and sometimes guitar teacher) always has a story. I cannot vouch for it, but he DOES tell a Brian story......

RIP Brian Wilson MY “meeting” Brian Wilson - 1981 (or 82?) I was preparing to go to Canada on a Summer Tour with an 8 piece funk rb band financed by Tito Jackson of Jackson 5 fame. As it happened, the original drummer with this iteration of the group was none other than John Cowsill of the family band The Cowsills. His parents had a condo in OXNARD BEACH and the bass player and I stayed there with John to cut down on commuting back and forth to the LA area during rehearsals.

One morning, John says he has to go back to his house (more like a compound in Pacific Palisades) for some reason or other and do I want to take a ride with him. So we head down the coast towards Malibu and we get to his house right on the Pacific Coast Highway and while we’re there, he casually asks me hey, do you want to meet Brian Wilson, he lives next door. DUH! So I follow John out a side door and we go into the house directly next door, quite literally a few feet from the house we’re in. John says let me see if he’s awake - and so I’m standing in the kitchen just gawking about, when who walks in, disheveled hair, haggard beard, bleary eyed, barefoot, and wearing an untied blue robe (a little too open, if you catch my meaning) but BRIAN WILSON. I’m standing there, 1/2 frozen as he opens the fridge, takes out a carton of orange juice, gulps it down, puts it back, closes the door, looks dead on at me for about 5 seconds with absolutely no expression, and leaves the kitchen without saying a word.

John comes back into the kitchen and says he can’t find him. I said, no biggie. We’ve already ‘met.’ RIP Brian W. - Hope there’s OJ in heaven. And a tie off for your robe.

That whole drug use thing.....

Were these the original lyrics to "409?"

I saved my pennies and I saved my dimes

Chug a lug, chug a lug 409

For I knew there would come a time

Chug a lug, chug a lug 409

When I would chug a quart of 409

Just asking.....I guess that WOULD mess you up....

Brings me way back to my youth visiting my cousins who were avid surfers... spent the whole summer falling in love while listening to Peter Frampton Comes Alive and Beach Boys Endless Summer ☀️

Good times!

That song always made me want to drink heavily...to excess...until death...
Wait... so that was why I drank heavily... to excess... to (near) death?

No, no, no.

I started that way before 1988. But it was cool to consider a plausible (extra-reality) excuse for a couple of seconds... 😂

Not nearly as offended as music fans for having had to hear that shit song.
Love that song...

Aruba, Jamaica, ooh, I wanna take you to
Bermuda, Bahama, come on pretty mama
Key Largo, Montego
Baby, why don't we go? (Ooh, I wanna take you down to Kokomo)
We'll get there fast
And then we'll take it slow
That's where we wanna go
Way down in Kokomo
