Kleingeld

New member
Hi all,

I'm searching for a B8S. My preference would be a short scale, but I'm absolutely open to discussing other options.

Thanks for looking. Any leads would be greatly appreciated!

You're hoping to find one for Small Money. Possibly.

Your screen-name is Kleingeld (small money in German). It's a pun on your name.

(But you probably knew that already and want to make me look stupid by answering.)

Sensible answer is that they aren't very cheap, usually $1000+. You may want to talk to HamStd on this board - he has posted a couple for sale recently. His e-mail is: Hamstd@gmail.com.

Thank you Andrew!

Truthfully, I was the one who was being stupid! I know Kleingeld means essentially pocket change, but in all the years I've used that moniker you're the first person who's ever picked up on it or made a pun of it. Brilliance on your part.

I struggle with English so don't start asking me to figure out what language someones moniker. /emoticons/default_tongue.png

That was interesting, funny, and yes Doc Large is brilliant.

His lead to HamStd would be your best bet. Then again, that was not so earth shattering as we all defer to HamStd when someone is looking for a USA Hamer.

"Cambio de bolsillo", good luck with you search!

best wishes,

Hamerica

The "S" in B8S actually denotes a short scale.

Hamer also made a medium scale B8M.

Any long scale Hamer 8-strings would need to be other models. No such thing as a long scale "B8L" model.

You're a little late....I got rid of 6 or 7 short scale ones in 2013.

Thanks for the education. Bummer that I missed your previous sales. Any leads anyone comes up with would be greatly appreciated.

Easier to find a Carlo Robelli 8-string used, if you need something to fill the void until you can find a real B8S.

You can pick up a used Robelli for $200-300. These were made for the Sam Ash music store chain after it bought the old Carlo Robelli brand name. They are imports.

These are long scale with bolt-on necks, but the same body style as the Hamer. For the money, they play/sound OK.

Here is a recent ad for one, to see what they look like.

Oh....and they come in any color....as long as it is silver sparkle /emoticons/default_smile.png

Great points, Bobby Marshall and MC2. Thank you for chiming in. Others have given the same sound (pun intended) advice.

The problem is that I know me. If I have a 12 and I string it as an 8 I'll feel like I'm cheating the bass or like I'm being disingenuous to the instrument (absurd, I know, but I know I'll do that). If I got Carlo Robelli, every time I picked it up to play it I'd be thinking in the back of the mind about the Hamer I really should be playing (and then I'd dump the Robelli after a few months). This knowledge comes from decades of buying basses only to turn around and sell them because I didn't wait until I had just the right one. At this point in my bass playing life I'm really just looking for keepers. And by keepers they have to be basses that don't cause a little voice in my head to say things like, "this isn't really an 8 string bass, it's a 12 that's being deprived of 4 strings" or "sure this bass looks a lot like a Hamer (albeit in silver sparkle), but it's really just an imitation."

I'll also add that I'm new to the Hamerfanclub site, and you people couldn't be nicer. I think as a community we bass players tend to be kind and cooperative people, and this subcommunity is more than living up to that reputation. Thanks for your help and thoughts.

Dude, I'm the same way. Gotta get what you have your heart set on or you'll never truly be happy.

Also, spot on observation about this forum and it's members, simply the best. period. As a bass player

I'm a member of many online forums and I find it wonderfully ironic that I'm most at home with a bunch

of (mostly) metal head guitarists! The absolute coolest, most helpful peeps on the interwebs are right

here.

P.S. sorry to go off topic.:/

They do pop up very occasionally. I had one that was dark red with the big logo, that I let go for about $1000 three years back. You're looking on reverb.com I take it, and have eBay alerts? You can set up a Google alert too. Good luck: they're great instruments. I just sold mine because I spend 95% of my time on guitar now.
