How does the mahogany differ tonally from the maple top versions?

What is the going rate for a used Artist or Artist Custom in excellent condition? I'm looking at a couple of them I'm interested in and don't want to overpay. I'm new to the Hamer guitars and figured you guys here would know. Thanks!
