sovtekking Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 Hey guys, wondering if there was anything that I could do to my sovtek tube midget that would tighten up the bass response a little (better caps, different tubes...)? Also, this amp lacks a bias pot on the circuit, so how should i go about switching the tubes from 5881/6l6 to EL34? thanks guys
billywade Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 No answer to your question here but I've been a tube midget user for three years now. I've owned four of them (three at once) and for the price they can't be beat IMHO. I did own one that had been re-capped by a student of Gerald Weber and didn't notice much difference in the sound compared to the others but my ear for tone is pretty weak. I have seen them biased although my knowledge of electronics doesn't go beyond changing pickups. The guy that biased mine had some sort of device from Angela that he used. I wasn't changing tubes at the time though. Regarding tone, a friend of mine swears that the low input is the way to go. I've found the amp pretty responsive to knob tweaks so you may just want to play around with it a little. Also, if you have access to other cabinets you may try some different choices. I usually play mine through a 1x12 or 2x12 but I've heard some great sounds through a 1x15. Sorry I can't be of more help but best of luck to you.
tgoss Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 Take it to a tech and discuss your options with him/her.Any amp can be modified to your liking. Well, just about.
