active over-ear hearing protection?

Anyone use something like this?, maybe this is old news: I was recently doing a little target practice with another Hamer owner, I've got these headphone style over-ears, they have little microphones in the front, and can be adjusted for volume. The idea is that quieter sound like conversation is amplified and you can talk comfortably while wearing these, but louder sounds are compressed, and there is some adjustment.  We both seemed to realize at the same time that these might be great for rehearsal with a loud band (I have no loud band to rehearse with at the moment), you'd get all the low end you'd need from the room, and you could add a little high end with the attenuator and built in mics. These are the Howard Leight Imact Sport model, they're only about $40, 2 AAA batteries, many other higher quality models are available.  Anyone use something like these for loud band rehearsal?
