PAF Man Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 New to this site and to Hamer. I have my eye on a new Hamer XT Series Sunburst SATF, and I wondered if there are any owners out there who can weigh in on pros and cons. Neck large? Tones nice and warm? Any shortcomings? I understanad that the quilted SATQ has the Duncan-designed pickups, but the flamed top SATF has Hamer pickups. Why? And what's the difference? Just looking for wiser input than you get on Harmony Central... Thanks!
Gabe Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 I cannot answer your questions, but I welcome you to the HFC. Gabe
BadJaxx Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 someone will be able to answer your questions shortly...in the meantime....welcome....and...the May issue of Guitar Player gives an editor's pick award to an XT model....i don't have that issue yet, but saw it in a buddy's copy...and there should be more info there...
lonechicken Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 I'm not sure what the differences if any are between Hamer pickups and Duncan Designed. The SATQ (and I assume the SATF) has a moderately thick neck. Not as thick as the Studio that they're modeled after. Yes, the tone is warm and quite good for the under $500 class mahogany types.Think of it this way, the stuff that might not be up to par with more expensive guitars (tuners, TOM, pickups, nut, pots) are all replaceable. The body and neck are works of budget art.I think the store owner types would have more insight into the XTs.
elduave Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 Thin necks generally, tone's are OK but that comes mostly from the player anyway, sometimes the truss rods are backwards, so I'd say that's a shortcoming (as are the string slot cuts on the nut-a little cramped-as are lots of brands imports IMO), I think all the XT double cuts now come with "Hamer" pickups (they used to have "Duncan Designed" a year or 2 ago), they generally look great, and are a decent value.
