Jeff R Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 In order to compensate for my recent acquisition of The Penguin ™ from Dearest Feynman, something's gotta leave the stable. Here's another pretty cool guitar for the money. 1992 Washburn SS-40 Steve Stevens Model. This was the MIK version of his signature model during his short stint with Washburn. Don't let the MIK tag fool you - in addition to being a well made and toneful guitar, this one has some notable upgrades. -- Crap MIK pickups were replaced with Duncans. Unsure what they are, but my ear tells me they are either JBs or 59s or similar class/output Duncans. -- Crap MIK bridge replaced with a Floyd Rose Special. IIRC, this Floyd variant was made in Japan. If so, I'd suspect it was ghost-built by Gotoh because it is NICE. Rock solid. -- Crap MIK FR-license nut replaced with Floyd Rose Special nut. It mounts from the top, by the way. -- Crap MIK trem studs replaced with hardened Gotoh studs. -- Crap MIK tuning keys replaced with Grovers. -- Crap MIK volume pot replaced with a CTS. -- Crap MIK three way switch replaced with an Allparts switch. Body is poplar, neck is one piece maple with skunk stripe. Finish is clean for its age. Some polishing swirls, some random pick scratches, fingernail nail marks around the knob and switch, tiny clearcoat scratches around the pickup adjustment screws -- the typical wear you'd see on a nearly-20-year-old black guitar. I don't have it on my lap right now, but I can't recall any significant dings or finish issues. It had a fret level and polishing shortly before I got it, so those are in great shape. It will ship in a non-original wood rectangular hardshell case. Manufacturer unknown (it's pretty old actually, with no logos or markings) but it's robust. This guitar is a monster under gain. The reverse slant pickups give the neck position a nice taste of bite and the bridge position a nice slice under the wound strings. The guitar's resonance, action, neck contour (beefier than you'd think for a shredder), it's just a great little package. Behind my Axis, this has been my second-favorite gigging guitar. You don't see a lot of these anymore, they didn't make a ton of them to begin with. A stock SS-40 recently went on eBay for $375. I'm selling this one with all the upgrades for $500 shipped in the lower 48. PM me, but e-mail me at natchbureau AT hotmail DOT com if you don't get a reasonably quick response. Captain Jack loves it and you will too!! LOL
