their build quality is far superior to anything  Gibson's "custom shop" puts out.

I guess having to listen to the Gibby bashing comes with the territory here, but to me it often comes across as resentful whining.

ALL Gibsons aren't bad! I've owned some very nice LP's. In fact, I traded two very nice LP Standards towards my Hamer Standard back in '81. I deeply regret selling that Standard (ser #0597). In all my experiences, and I've been around.....I've never played a crappy (US) Hamer. I have encountered some crappy Gibsons, though. And there may be some crappy Hamers out there. Haven't run into 'em yet.

So to quote Rick Nielsen, "Life's too short to play a crappy guitar.....get a Hamer!"

I know. I was shocked in '92 when I went to a guitar show here in Denver and they were getting $1000 bucks for em, because I had just bought a '59 cherry double cutaway for $400 in Fargo in '90.

I also knew a local musician in Fargo in the mid 80s who told me he sold his '59 Les Paul Standard to Steve Lukather for $1000. Bet he really regrets that, if its true.

It's everybody wanting what they had when they were young. My father-in-law just bought an old Vox Berkely amp because he had one when he was 20.

I try not to think that way, but I admit I'm just as guilty.

I'd settle for having the same enthusiasm and wonder about playing that I did when I was a kid. Getting old(er) and working harder takes it out of me.

I've looked at some Hamer models, but I'll take a short cut: if I'm looking for fat and heavy like a Les Paul, what models should I look at first?
