Lack of proper string response????

Hamer Dave

Question

Posted

Just acquired an 85 proto ss(?). There was some alterations on this. But supposedly back original(?). Main concern is not getting crisp, clear string response. Mainly high e. Though it's not buzzing, since relief appears to be there, I am getting a dampened, soggy (for lack of better words) response. I'm guessing the end points are lacking integrity? I dismiss the nut end, as it occurs while fretting as well. That would leave us with the bridge end. It is a Hamer/Floyd type Schaller. I did notice the posts are leaning forward a few degrees. So I was expecting to find them loose. When I unstrung the gtr I found the posts are still pretty solidly embedded though at a slight forward angle. I presume these should be, and were originally perpendicular to the body. Saddles appear tight. Just not hearing that solid tone. Any ideas? I presume there's simple explanation/fix for this. IThanks!
