hamertek98 Posted September 18, 2005 Posted September 18, 2005 Is it ok to use 3/1 oil on tuning gears? Closed back Scaller bass. Thanks, DeWayne
Guest Mike Lee Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 I wouldn't use any oil on sealed tuning gears. They are generally lubed for life. Regular oiling of non-sealed tuners (usually Kluson style) can cause the oil to seep into the wood and cause it to soften and rot, which can be a big problem. If the tuners really do require periodic lube, I would use a light synthetic grease. Militec and MilComm make excellent synthetic greases.
hamertek98 Posted September 19, 2005 Author Posted September 19, 2005 Thanks Mike, I didn't oil anything tonight. I remember someone mentioned the 3/1 a long time ago (if I remember, it was for open back). I decided against it 'cause they are closed back. One of my Hamer's gears gets spongy (?) from time to time. I'm restringing a couple Monday. I think the problem is too many wraps around the post. Thanks, DeWayneP.S. anyone getting together in Indiana in November?
