They've been around for about 3 years, but the Infinity Primus P363 just popped up on my radar:

It grabbed my attention from this review by the Absolute Sound, better known for their picky reviews of multi-thousand-dollar systems. If a $400/pair of speakers grabs their attention in a good way, it's worth checking out if you're in the market. Reviewer Robert Greene is one of their most experienced speaker guys. Disclaimer: I have never heard this speaker but I trust these reviews more than most, esp. since--when I do have direct experience--their positive reviews usually match my own impressions, including my own phono cartridge, speakers, and the CD player and integrated amp I just installed at my nextdoor neighbor's house.

Infinity is part of the much larger Harman International, which, starting with Harman-Kardon, has become the parent company of JBL, Infinity, headphone/microphone legend AKG, high end electronic companies Lexicon and Mark Levinson, and high end speaker company Revel. The review reads like a good example of what economy of scale can do for the price/performance ratio. Much of Harman's Infinity and JBL lines appeal to the large mid-fi home theater market. They are carried by Crutchfield and Best Buy, and wouldn't be if they couldn't move a lot of their product. I could elaborate, but it's probably better to click the link and read the review.

Caveats:

  • The reviewer mentioned that the treble is about 1-2 dB tipped up above 1Khz, but is easily tamed if you have tone controls.
  • The speaker behaves more like a 4-ohm load, which means to get the most out of it you should have an amp with a 4-ohm rating, or you won't get bass and dynamics this speaker can produce.
  • I have not heard this speaker myself, but you can probably audition them at any Best Buy.
  • At the time the review was conceived, there must have been more $300/pair deals than there are now. You can get them from Amazon for around $330/pair shipped (if you have Amazon Prime).

If you go mail order (available many, many places including Crutchfield and Amazon), make sure you check the return policy before you buy. It can sometimes take a week or two to break speakers in before you know for sure what they sound like and how they work with your electronics and the room itself.

If you're into home theater, Infinity offers a complete suite of this speaker line for full surround sound.
