What does R? mean???

Please inform me. I regularly see things like R8 and R7 etc, mostly it seems to be about old Gibsons and presumably mostly about Les Pauls.

But what exactly does it mean, what is the meaning of the R and of the subsequent number?

The R means reissue, the number represents the year:

R7 = 1957 Reissue

R8 = 1958 Reissue

R0 = 1960 Reissue
