Abaco Posted May 17, 2006 Posted May 17, 2006 Yeah, I knew that about Meniketti. I guess the 6L6's are a little like the 6550 he use to use in his Marshalls. When we 1st started playing in a band in high school nearly all the songs we knew were Y&T numbers! His signature is on my pickguard of my 1st electic guitar - cheap black LP copy. He was very insprational to me for his melodic solo work. Do you know if Joey Alves had problems with drugs/alcohol? (thread hijack). Continued thread hijack - Hey ZR you and I would get along great. I play in a Y&T tribute our band and Joey Alves came to our last rehearsal to play tunes with us and give me some pointers. Joey's retired and doing fine. Really, really a nice guy - very down to earth. Our band members have played with Meniketti in the past, too. Dave sounds good with the 6L6s. And, yes, his old Marshalls had the 6550s. Joey actually showed up at our last gig and played my guitar when I sang Barroom Boogie and our other guitarist's guitar when we played I'll Cry for You. His fingers have got the "crunch" still. Yeah..we like Y&T. Anyway, regarding tubes...our other guitarist has experimented with 6550s in his Marshalls and I'm pretty sure he's back to the EL-34s. It's my impression that in order to get that old, high-gain tone with the 6550s you gotta have the amp turned up to blistering volume levels.
