Jimbilly Posted October 18, 2006 Posted October 18, 2006 I picked up an very cool MIJ jazz bass today, the '80s one with the painted headstock and painted back of neck, and the large pole pieces on the pups. IF Peso doesn't need it, should I put my '79 fretless P neck on that instead of my nearly identical Jazz Bass Special (P and J pup). It's a fine point, I know, but would there be any benefit to having more of a J for fretless bass? The J would be a really good one for a hard-fretboard (Jaco) fretless conversion too, hmmm... Today was a good day for MIJ fenders, I also picked up a pretty nice MIJ strat, both cheap.
tomteriffic Posted October 19, 2006 Posted October 19, 2006 LOL! I've got a buddy who, if he has two Strats in the room, can spend a month in there swapping out parts from one to the other. This sounds like that!Seriously, my Fretless 4 has a P-J setup and the fretless 5 has a J-J deal. The bridge J pickup, in either case, is great to get ther buzz and the fretless 'moan' (I can't think of another term for it). But, given my druthers, I'll go for the P in the middle because the J gives up too much whomp on a fretless. If you're playing jazz, maybe, but I find myself dialing up the low end a fair amount on the 5'er to compensate for that lack of grunt that the P-bass pickup provides.
