The original Direct Drive had three knobs - Gain, Tone, and Volume, with a pull switch on one of the knobs to increase the "harmonics" or midrange drive.

The Direct Drive SS also has the same three knobs on the outside, but inside it has 3 trim pots - bass, presence, and harmonics. The bass trimmer allows you to balance out the bass with your clean tone so there is no drop like on a TS. The presence trimmer increases the treble content within the distortion, making it more defined and twangy. The harmonics trimmer increases the midrange gain and saturation. Lots of tones in there.
