Zoner Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 Another great shred-tastic guitar of mine that is cursed with EMG's and a Floyd. In this case the Ibanez Sure Bet/Edge (with the usually absent Backstop trem-setting device) makes for a very stable and different feeling Floyd experience but alas I cannot abide the active pickups. Rather than undo the installation of said EMG's, off it goes into more willing hands. This is from 1987 - the very first year Ibanez hit the market with their signature "shredder" lines; JEM, RG (Roadstar Guitar), Saber and Radius (with a Power and some Pro Lines for good measure but I digress), and it is stock with the exception of the electronics. While the RG and S models got the super thin, wide and flat "Wizard" neck, the Radius got a more rounded, fuller profile dubbed "Ultra". This is a great feeling neck and has everything in common with a good Strat, including the 22 frets where the Wizard generally had 24. The body is simply the smoothest, curviest and most ergonomically friendly cut in all of SuperStratdom. It balances perfectly and is a good medium weight - perfect for long gigs weight-wise and tonally too with its versatility. The pickups (EMG SA-SA-89?) are clear, loud and round, with a pull function on the volume pot that splits the bridge hummer. The tones are very good, but just not my "flavor" if you will. The individual mini's for selecting your pickup(s) allow for all combinations as well as off (you'll be surprised how often that is the best selection ) and encourages rapid toggling for cliches' sake. The body is in good nick with a couple holes from a Roland GK pickup install being the biggest cosmetic booger, and the frets are showing a tad bit of wear on the first few (might be prudent to have them touched as they have never been), otherwise it very clean and needs nothing (except a set of DiMarzio's but I'm not going there dagnabit). It really plays great and stays in tune forever, and is among the most resonant guitars I have owned, but I'm simply too lazy and broke to do the pickup swap - unless someone wants to offer up $150 for the EMG set with pots and jack to force my hand, otherwise for sale at $550 shipped in a HSC.
