Brownsound Posted August 9, 2005 Posted August 9, 2005 Im attempting to make some recordings of my various amps using a portable studio and Sure 57 mic. So far I have lucked out and gotten some pretty good tracks but for the most part have been unable to reproduce the good stuff. I have experimented with mic placement to some degree but I would like to get some ideas about mic placement and sound characteristics from someone much more experienced than me. Im using a G-Flex 2x12 and several different heads. Thanks in advance
pesocaster Posted August 9, 2005 Posted August 9, 2005 I've been lucky on a consistent level with this set up1 mic (sm57 most of the time) close to the cone off center... then a condenser 7~8 feet back head level (about 6 '-ish) pointed at the cabinet... then blend the sounds.... If I only have 1 mic... and / or a live room... I'll only close mic ... but try to get a good condenser if that's all I have to work with... YMMVGood luck!
tomteriffic Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 You can get a huge variety of tones with an SM -57 almost touching the grillcloth. Start at the outside edge of the cone and work your way in. Angle the mike toward or away from the center of the cone. Pesorob is right about a room mike (if you have a decent sounding room) as well But an inch toward or away from the center of the cone can make a huge difference in the recorded tone. I usually start about half-way out the cone and tweak as needed.
