Mixing speakers. Would this work?

Disturber

Question

Can I mix an 80's G12-65 with a G12H 30 w from 1971? Both 8ohms, in a Marshall 50W combo,

I know there can be trouble when you mix 2 speakers with different wattages. Would the total effect be enough for the 50 w amp?

The total wattage an enclosure can handle is the wattage of the lowest-powered speaker times the number of speakers. So, 2 x 30 = 60 watts.

Just keep in mind that the rated wattage for a speaker is at the onset of distortion. If you run your amp flat out so that the power amp is distorting, it can exceed the rated power. A 50 watt amp in full output tube saturation might be putting out 60-70 watts.

So sometimes it helps to have speakers rated higher than the amp. As Chris said, you speaker combination should handle 60 watts, so that leaves some breathing room and you should be OK.

Make sure you wire them in series and use the 16 ohm setting on the amp if it has one. Otherwise wire them in parallel and use the 4 ohm setting.
