Direct Mounting Pickups? How?

I was replacing the neck pickup in my McInturff with a Dimarzio Area 58 and the little insert things that the pickups screw into popped out. I was going to fill the holes using either the dowel or toothpick method and then use wood screws to install the pickup, but I don't know what size screw to use? Or maybe I could just get new inserts from somewhere and use those? How do you builders out there direct-mount your pickups?

Belt and braces way - get some #4-40 brass inserts, drill hole and screw them in then screw pickup in

Quick way - get some Telecaster neck pickup mounting screws, choose target and get screwing !

To be honest 'normal' wood screws tend to be too fat and too short although obviously i don't have a clue what your local home depot stocks.

I always plan to go the first way but 50% of the time take the lazy option.
