I had a previous version of iTunes on my computer (laptop) that I had ripped a LOT of CDs to and also made quite a few purchases from the iTunes store. I have two iPods that I had downloaded a bunch of stuff onto from my iTunes on the laptop.
The laptop was progressively acting up for the last year or so, to the point wher it would freeze up constantly. I decide to re-install all the OS and software and start fresh. I backed up all of the stuff from the laptop that I wanted to save (pictures, music, etc.) including (what I thought to be) my iTunes library to an external hard drive, following instruction on the iTunes site.
After the successful OS and software restore, I installed the latest version of iTunes (which I think sucks compared to the one I WAS using). Following the iTunes instructions, I moved the iTunes library from the external hard drive back onto the laptop to the location that iTunes would be looking for it.
Well, all of the artwork and song titles are there, but only about 3 albums of music is there. When trying to play the rest, it gives the message "cannot locate file". WTF?
It seems that when doing the backup, maybe all of the artwork, etc. got backed up, but not all the music. Could this actually be the case? Or is there something I'm missing here?
Assuming the backup was unsuccessful, I'm hoping to be able to import the music I have onmy iPods back into iTunes on th elaptop. That would save me from having to import ALL the stuff I originally had in iTunes. I'm probably an idiot, but I can't seem to figure out how to do this...can somebody explain how this can be accomplished?
The second thing is that iTunes claims you can re-download the stuff you already purchased from the iTunes store, which they further state is useful if the files get lost or damaged. Well, that's my situation. BUT, it also states the you can do this if the item is NOT in your library already. I can't seem to do this either. On the list of "purchased items" in my iTunes store account, it says "downloaded" next to all the titles. Could it be because my library shows the title, etc. even though the music isn't there?
I'm looking for a little help here to see if I can fix this before I have to re-import a ton of discs and worse yet pay AGAIN for stuff I previously downloaded.
