Early Hamer Sunburst Binding

ARM OF HAMER

Question

Posted

I'm posing this question in regards to the early [77-79] Hamer "Sunburst" guitars............I own the 2 Black 1979s.The first one I bought has only a slight amount of checking with just a few stray lines on the front horns and body. The other guitar, the one I bought last December has a ton of finish checking all over the guitar which I think looks really cool.To the point here and my question.............. why is it that on neither guitars fingerboard bindings there is none of the typical binding cracks by the fret ends that you see so very often on vintage Gibson and even newer Gibson guitars? I have seen this through the years on other makes and models of guitars as well.I'm not surprised its not on the first guitar but on the second guitar which spent a lot of its life in cold temps and given how checked the rest of the guitar is I would expect to see some of this also on the fingerboard binding. Its a small point to be sure but unusual.I've read in "THE BOOK" that these early Holmes era "Sunbursts" that were "Bound and Crowned" shared the same supplier of fingerboards that Gibson itself used..............so what was done different? Or.............. I'm I overlooking something? ........... materials, adhesives used.?????? I know the binding shrinks over time and temperature changes contribute also to all of this so...........??????? WHY?
