low-tech live recording?

I'm playing bass for a friends show tomorrow night, it's his originals plus a couple of covers, acoustic driven but with drums, lead and bass. He wants to record it, but without a lot of hassle. I'm thinking we can just set up two mic stands, run a pair of mics into my mackie 1202 and then to a tape deck, -that should be adequate, and might sound better than plugging the tape deck into the 'tape out' of the main mixer board. My mic choices are: sm57s, 58s, or would condensers from the drum mic kit work? (I have no clue on how good an idea the drum condensers is). Ideas for the low tech option? (Peso, you busy Friday evening???). I'll be playing one of my Hamer 5s btw, -Hamer content fulfilled.

take a pair of condensors. put them on one stand on a double mount and cross them so that they point in opposite directions of each other. you can put this up front or some place in the house.

take the out of the board and run that into the mix for a blend of live and PA mix.

good luck

Great advice!, one of my condensers was making horrible sounds, so I swapped out some sm58s at the last possible moment. I ran a main out from the board in for most of what was recorded, and just a pinch of the the mics for depth and stereo. The tape sounds really great, the kid is super happy with it. I've own far worse sounding commercially produced live cds.

It was a pretty strange gig, in a good way; We played my old high school auditoriom, all 3 of the other guys are high school seniors, and I was a senior there 20 years ago (feeling like the old guy), I remembered how much I would've like to have played there when I was 18.
