aliparla Posted February 2, 2023 Posted February 2, 2023 After some time looking for a 5 string Hamer bass to pop up, I finally got this Chaparral. I have a couple of Hamer guitars, so I knew the bass was going to be amazing. I'm not dissapointed; on the contrary, amazing was an understatement. Lame touch up More paint missing on the neck The truss rod cover was missing, I ordered one from Dave at frets on the net, who did an excellent work. It has Bartolini pickups and the controls are volume, tone and bass cut, which I like a lot. And now I'm curious about the difference between the Bartolinis and EMGs, but maybe it's too early to get another one...
Jimbilly Posted February 2, 2023 Posted February 2, 2023 Awesome! Those are great, I've had one for almost 30 years I think. Mine is 'iridescent' paint with the same pickups, it was my first Hamer. It seems to me that the Barts have a little more of a "purr' to them than emg's. What year is yours? Does the volume have a 'pull' to bypass the active eq? I wonder if your 3 way switch was installed to replace the blend knob? Mine is an '89: volume with pull bypass, blend knob with detent, and bass treble cut/boost with detents. (terrible lighting in my office)
aliparla Posted February 2, 2023 Author Posted February 2, 2023 Looks great! Mine is from 1989 too, but the electronics look different: the pots are not detented, and the volume is not push-pull. The wiring was a bit sloppy, so someone messed with it at some point. However, most of the Bartolini loaded chaps I've seen on the web have the switch, and those with four knobs have EMG. But yours not, so I'm a bit lost in this. Tomorrow I will try to open it and take some pictures of the cavity.
aliparla Posted February 7, 2023 Author Posted February 7, 2023 It took me a little longer, but here are the pictures: Looks the same as this one:
Jimbilly Posted February 7, 2023 Posted February 7, 2023 here's the 'guts' of mine, I always assumed it was stock, but I don't know, I think it was about 5 years old when I bought it. Bartolini is printed on the preamp. Mine also has a cutout in the body for a battery, and didn't come with a battery cover. The foam in the battery 'box' used to be stiff enough to hold the battery without a cover, but now the foam has disintegrated, and I cut a cover out of clear plastic, which seems to be a good solution when wondering if there is a battery in there or not?
aliparla Posted February 9, 2023 Author Posted February 9, 2023 I think both may be stock, perhaps they changed the electronics at some point? I like the cover idea, well thought.
