sonic1974 Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 Hi guys,I've never tried a Standard before. My experience with Hamers has been a Duotone, a Studio Custom and a 78 Sunburst. For people that have played both, how would you compare a Standard against a Studio Custom, tone-wise? Also, I'm curious if anyone could compare, say a 4 digit Standard against a early Sunburst. Thanks!

Thanks!A 4 digit Standard has a lot more body mass than a Sunburst. They have more of a classic Les paul tone to them, they could compete with any vintage 60 LP as far as I am concerned. Great neck carves too, just right for me. Round, slightly over medium in size. The '79 Sunbursts I have played have been more different when compared to each other. But lets say a Sunburst sounds more like a mix of a Les Paul and an SG. They have more bite to the tone. Both the Standards and the Sunbursts had their bridge pickups closer to the bridge than any modern Hamer. That sound is a bit brighter with a lot of bite. I love it, some don't like it as much. But it gives these guitars their characteristic sound. Then there is the sustainblock, and the old mahogany wood used. All great in the equation mix of good tone. One secret to the great tone of these old Hamers are the Dimarzio PAF's made for Hamer at the time. They are similar in tone to my 1996 Duncan Antiquites, but they are seem to have a wider tone register. The neck pickup is just awesome. The bridge is, like most genine PAF winds, great when dialed in right. But some might want more "omph", especially metal guitarists. I find it great through and old Marshall, or an old Fender amp. Great cleans, great for classic rock.
