I know that guitar. Purchased new at Haight/Ashbury Music Center in ‘97. I was a millstone, but not too bad both a wide, leather strap.

    That Standard/TS9 into a JCM800 2204 was pure magic.

The one I played was in Annapolis, MD in 1996-97 at Garrett Park.  I recall that it had some streaks in the Korina, but it wasn't quite "Black Korina".  It was gone the next time I stopped by a couple months later.

One of the main reasons I eventually got rid of my full-sized Hamer Standards over the years was that I was in constant dread of hitting something/anything with the guitar(s) and dinging it up.  Weight was never an issue, though.

I've owned a fair number of Standards - almost all have been feathers, weightwise.
The absolute heaviest Standard I've ever played was a '95 Korina LE - I wouldn't be surprised to learn that one weighed 12 lbs!

  3. As kids, Serial and I did what every unsupervised kid under 10 did back in the '70s, and ordered a bunch of albums through Columbia House's entrapment ads, where you taped a penny to the card, added a stamp and a few weeks later, got 13 records, 8-Tracks or Cassettes.  "Endless Summer" was in that mix, and got worn out!

  4. I've known Jay since the very early days of the HFC way back in the 20th Century.  We hung out a fair bit over the years and I fondly recall a couple lunch breaks from work when Jay, Turdus and me got our greasy fingerprints all over a bunch of guitars at a nearby Northern VA Hamer dealer (good ol' Russ...).  I caught him out playing in a band or two, and I think he probably struggled with the urge to throw a beer at one of my bands from the crowd over the years as well.

Quite possibly, the funniest and smartest muthafuckah I've known, and I managed to stay out of the receiving end of his sometimes caustic wit for far longer than I didn't.  I was probably his primary supporter behind the scenes on the board for many years, and more than a few times, talked things out with him in order to prevent a Chernobyl-quality meltdown here, but I wasn't always successful.  Not sure what turned, but we're all human, I guess.

I tried to reach him via FB a little over a month ago, but haven't heard back, but I know he has far more important things on his plate right now, and I totally understand.

Jay - I wish you nothing but the best, and you've made more people laugh - and some even cry - around here, but at the end of the day, you're a fucking LEGEND.
