Smokin Tone Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 I'll put in a plug for Dr. Z amps. The Route 66 has a great old Marshall tone in the JTM 45 vein, while the KT-45 is more of a 50 watt plexi. And the Carmen Ghia through the right speaker can get very Marshally too. IMO Dr Z amps always lacked something. I have played 3 or 4 of them and they just seemed to be lacking any dimension in there tone and sounded rather sterile. The harmonic overtones were not great. By design the sweet spot on a Z is when it just starts to break up. After that it kinda looses it's mojo. Tone is very subjective and some may like them but I'm just tossing out my take on it.
guitfiddler Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 Is the componet quality of the Ceriatone stuff the same as the real amps? I particularly interested in the DC-30 kit they have.Yes Nik uses good parts (Sprauge, Mallory etc). He does use his own transformers and though I've heard no complaints, some people opt to get their own trannies. Usually due to the fact that it reduces the shipping cost if buying a kit. Although nervous about sending pre-payment $$ to Malaysia, after a couple email exchanges with Nik and studying all of the reviews on Harmony Central (okay, okay, I realize.....), I took the plunge and have ordered a JTM45 complete assembled chassis (less tubes) from Ceriatone. Getting head box (cab.) from MojoTone.
Smokin Tone Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 That is cool! Give us a report when you get it. Nik's assembly and soldering is top notch from pics I have seen from some of his customers.

Probably it's something that I need. But it seems I will need to stay with Rivera's, because in this contry they're avaliable as well as maybe Bogner'a and Solando's and Brunetti's. That's all. Out of tube Marsall's we can opt only TSL and DSL, and that's all too. Peavey's 5150 and stuff are ok, but they're completely different and the Mesa/Boogie F-30 is a bit controversial. The weight of apms (from 25 kilo) raises their prices tremendously, when delivered from abroad.
hamersandstrats Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 Here's some sloppy riffing into a Reverend Kingsnake. This and the Hellhound are great amps for half the price of a Dr. Z. Keep in mind that I just intended to see if I could record my guitar using the built in mic on my iBook. http://www.soundclick.com/util/downl...key=950C3A50-7
zzdat Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 I did a sit in last week and the amp on stage was a Marshall JMC 2000 601. I hated the amp for gain tones. Too gritty and harsh. The third OD channel was just the same but with more gain. Whats the world comming too when the best sound out of a Marshall was the clean channel. This amp dosen't even come close to the JMC 2000 Dual super lead that I use for most gigs. Yuck! Can I say Yuck again!Cool BeansGene
Michael_ Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 You could try to find a clean, older Traynor YBA-1 Bassmaster, they supposedly nail early Marshall and Bassman tones - same circut.
