LittleC Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 Anyone have any commnets on the Electro-Harmonix EF86 tube? I'm looking for a back-up for my Route 66.Also, anyone use the the Russian SED Winged 'C'?
halide Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 isn't there only one modern production ef86? i would try one of the NOS dealers. make sure they are well screened for microphonics. i have some valvo, mullard and teles. they are really nice and still pretty affordable for NOS.
ArnieZ Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 LittleCNone of the new production ef 86's have proved reliable. I have tried amperex, mullard telefunken and valvo ef 86's. The Valvo is probably the best bang for the buck and a mighty fine sounding tube. If you want a Russian tube I have a spare that was thrown in on a group auction. It's your's for the asking.ArnieZ
straightblues Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 Buy some old ones off Ebay. Those will be relatively cheap since not a lot of amps use them. You can buy a lifetime supply for less than $50.http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?f...&category0=
Guest Mike Lee Posted October 4, 2007 Posted October 4, 2007 I believe Dr. Z said his amps are voiced for the SED "Winged C" EF-86's and the vintage tubes will not sound as intended. But he said he has to sort through them to get good ones. I've seen GT branded EF-86's but they are probably just SED's as well. But GT may do a decent job of sorting out for the good ones. Or not.
