flarocks Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 I was just wondering if anyone had done this? I have a Dimarzio SD and was thinking of putting it in and seeing what it sounded like. I am a little bored of the JB and wanted to try something different. Anybody have any opinions on the issue?
Travis Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 Why the hell not? Dean uses Super Distortions in their Z's which are similar in build to the Standard. I say go for it. Can't be any worse than the JB.
princeofdarkness56 Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 The super distortion is a great pickup. A PAF with balls.
flarocks Posted February 18, 2008 Author Posted February 18, 2008 Well, I put the SD in my Standard Custom and played it at church this weekend. I was disappointed with the results. It wasn't as 'loud' as the JB and was a very poor match for the jazz in the neck. Everytime I switched pickups to the neck pu (jazz), there was a discernable gain in clarity and much less of the compressed sound I was getting from the super distortion. On its own it sounded ok but with the jazz in the neck it was a no go. Needless to say the JB is back in and I am much more into the balance of these two pickups than I was before I tried the swap.On a brighter note, I put a FRED into my 95 special FM in place of the JB and OH MY GOD!!!!!! The guitar rips!!!!! Now I can do that Larry Carlton/Robben Ford sound I love so much. Makes my JSX sound like a poor mans Dumble. Really opened up the sound of the guitar and was a glorious match for the Jazz in the neck. If any of you get the chance to try this, do it.....I can't see how you would be disapppointed.
