bbobb24 Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 When replacing power tubes, if you buy a matched set should you still have your amp biased?
seeker Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 It depends on the amp. If it is cathode biased, no. Provided the tubes are within production specs (which they should be if you buy from a reputable dealer). If it is "fixed" bias, then yes, you need to at least have the biased checked. BTW, the term fixed bias refers to the fact that the bias is set to a fixed value uisng a variable resistor (pot). What amp is it?
bbobb24 Posted March 1, 2008 Author Posted March 1, 2008 It's a Trace Elliot Velocette. I'm amp stupid. I'm thinking that it's a fixed bias amp, but I don't know....I never had to worry about this stuff when all I had were acoustic guitars....
slider313 Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 I believe it a class "A" fixed bias amp and all you need is a good matched set of tubes.
Brewmaster Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 I believe it a class "A" fixed bias amp and all you need is a good matched set of tubes. Not class A per se but cathode biased amps do not need to be rebiased. EL 84 based amps are usually cathode biased.
