tragedybysyntax Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 Okay so.... I had this 83 hamer special I bought at a yard sale and was painted black and beat to f'ng hell.... I stripped it down to reveal a beautiful flamed maple top/mahagony body and Hand oiled the entire thing. I had EMG"s in the guitar but a buddy of mine bought the emg's out of it. SO! I"m ready to sell this baby since I really need some mulah and I was wondering if it'd be better to sell it as is without pickups or strings... or to go ahead and put some okay pickups in there and get it strung? I also was aware of the estimated value of this since it's in really good shape and has the checkerboard logo from when rick nielsen was first endorsed. Thanks guys! I'll post pics asap.

I wouldn't invest much in pickups and strings-I don't think that they will increase the value. Not sure what value you're placing on the guitar, but understand that an oil finish won't increase what you'll get out of it, since you can't really refinish over oil (as I understand it anyway). If it's unbroken/unrepaired structurally, you'd possibly do better than a repaired one with original finish. I'm sure a lot of people here would be interested in seeing pics of the guitar. Is the serial number intact?
cmatthes Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 Actually, I think the checkerboard thing on the Specials was more a racing-inspired thing than a Rick Nielsen inspired thing, although he was one of their most visible endorsers back in the 70s and early 80s.Agreed that there is some stable value in an unbroken body/neck and Sustainblock bridge/Hamer tuners/original pots, but part of the value of those guitars lies in the original pickups too. Having it done in an oil finish will not enhance the value much. It may be best to sell as a "project" guitar.
serial Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 If you have the original pickups, etc, they'd probably fetch close to what you would get for the guitar by itself.
