nervous Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 As I shop for a Newport I have a couple quick questions. 1) It's a semi-hollow body and not a full hollow body, correct? It's solid down the center? I only ask because I thought it was semi but read somewhere else on in the forum that it's full hollow so I want to be clear.2) Are they physically bigger than say an Artist or Special FM model? If so, by how much. It's hard to tell in the pics.Thanks.
Sam Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 The internal construction of most Newports looks like this: The Newport 90 is said to have a solid center block. I'd like to know if the block runs all the way to the base of the body. I'll get the tape measure out and check on the size dif. The Newport is bigger, though not at all bulky like a 335. The perfect size in my view. Edit: The Newport is around one inch wider. The Studio came to 13" and the Newport to 14". Here's a pic:
nervous Posted September 25, 2009 Author Posted September 25, 2009 That's perfect and thank you very much for posting that much detail. I can assume that a slightly Newport's, say around 2000, were the same internally. The one I am considering has a 6 digit serial # beginning with 050 which (if I understand the code) makes it a 2000?Thanks again.
Sam Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 That's perfect and thank you very much for posting that much detail. No trouble - I'm on holidays. I can assume that a slightly Newport's, say around 2000, were the same internally. The one I am considering has a 6 digit serial # beginning with 050 which (if I understand the code) makes it a 2000?Yup, it's a Y2K, and it will have the same construction as the first pic that I posted.
GaryT Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 Hollowbodys is the more accurate description. The size though smaller than a 335 is slightly larger than a ES-336 or ES-356. Yet for example the weight on mine is just under 7lbs. The internal construction has remained the same over the years. Out of all the Hamer designs/electrics the Newport Pro has remained my favorite axe. Though its a custom order design.
BadgerDave Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 I believe the size is approximately the same as a Gibson 336, the down-sized version of the 335. However, the sides, back and top of the Newport are all significantly thicker than the Gibson, and are solid wood rather than laminates. IMO, this results in a tone closer to an Artist than a 335 or 336. More solid and woody, less air.
