Guest tunakdude Posted August 20, 2005 Posted August 20, 2005 well, now that i have two hamers, i have joined the fan club, but i have added a second volume knob to my dual humbucker hamer mirage now (it was single volume, single tone) and i'm having some troublei tried to follow the wiring that was in there, but split the output from the switch so that rather than having both pickups wired to the same lug and out to one volume, i sent what i thought to be two output lugs to the two different volumes, then the volumes go to one tone- but the volumes arent independent- if one is all the way down, then even when that pickup isn't selected, there's no output at allso i know there are tons of hamers with two volumes and one tone, could you look in the back of yours and maybe describe how the wiring goes- or if you don't have time go through all of it, just check to see if they use a stereo pot for the tone pot? i'm wondering if that's necessary for what i want to dothanks
Jeroen Posted August 20, 2005 Posted August 20, 2005 wiringtake a look at this, this is how it works on a dual humbucker guitar 3 pos. toggle and 2 volumes + 1 tone.other schematics can be found on this HFC site under Guitars.Jeroen
Guest tunakdude Posted August 20, 2005 Posted August 20, 2005 oh wow, thanks, i should've poked around the site before postingbut thanks very much
Jeroen Posted August 20, 2005 Posted August 20, 2005 no problem, not all guitars are on there, but I guess most of the different setups could be found.let us know how it went!!Jeroen
Guest tunakdude Posted August 20, 2005 Posted August 20, 2005 it works perfectly!if anyone here remembers what a mirage looks like, they remember the two little black knobs... well, now that i've got three pots, i replaced the knobs with 3 amber colored "speed knobs" (the big knobs found on many gibsons) and they match the wood tone wonderfully... i did have to go ahead and replace all the pots cuz the new knobs require knarled (spelling?) shafts, but now it looks really cool, and the wiring works great...i've got one more week before i go back to school and i'm gonna try to make a little website with pics and maybe even soundclips of all the gear i've built or modded, and i'll post it up herethanks for the help
Hamer95USA Posted August 20, 2005 Posted August 20, 2005 Hey tunakdude, Why did you modify your Hamer Mirage II? Why not get a USA Studio or Special instead of doing that? The guitar is going to lose value because of the extra hole you drilled into it. Wow, how come you didn't rewire the tone control to be a volume control and not have to drill an unnecessary hole in the guitar? OUCH!!! Guitar George

Guitar George Not to answer for tunakdude, but the Mirage II is a totally different beast from a Special HB or Studio due to the 25.5" scale length and the trem. Personally, I think it's better to mod a guitar a decrease it's value than not mod it and never play it because it doesn't work for you. However, if I was doing something like this, I probably would have tried to use a conentric pot for the 2 volumes. -Austin
Guest tunakdude Posted August 21, 2005 Posted August 21, 2005 well, i got the guitar used this summer at a local shop that is very nice to me...it had dings all over the front, a decent chunk out of the upper bout right by the strap pin, and a more decent chunk out of the neck behind the 6th fret (which the shop filled in very nicely, and now you can't feel it at all)...so it wasn't in mint condition, but it still played great and sounded wonderful... and after submitting it to all kinds of whammy mayhem and seeing it stay in tune, i thought it was the most stable whammy equipped guitar i had yet played... so they sold it to me for $600 out the door and i was pretty happy with the deal...so it wasn't in perfect condition, and a hamer mirage ii isn't exactly a collector's item, so i figured that making it into what i want it to be isn't such a bad idea... maybe i won't get 600$ back for it in a few years.. oh well, i certainly haven't ruined itand besides i really really like the way these 3 amber knobs look on it as opposed to how it looked with the two little black knobs... and furthermore i'm more comfortable having three seperate knobs (and a tone knob is a must for me.. i rarely have the tone wide open) than messing with the skinny little knob on top of another...and so, i did the drillin... didn't hurt crack the finish at all... it went very smoothly (cept that in the back the routing isn't quite as clean as what they had, nor does it have the copper paint underneath the new pot)
