peedenmark7 Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Recently picked up a '96 Charvel Tl-1 [reissue charvel t51 look alike]and find the control layout sort of odd.first pot, 250k is a push /pull which acts as volume for the magnetics and a kill for the piezo. a 5 meg controls the piezo. no tone which I find odd.the 3 way switches between the tele p'ups. What is the hamer T51F layout ? I've seen a few with mini toggles.. Please do tell !thanks !
anotherfreak Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 I simple vol/vol setup. Is the output jack stereo? or are they seperate? some will have a stacked pot in the tone position for a vol/tone for the acoustic output. I have seen them with a stack using the main knob for a electric side tone while the secondary knob is the vol for the acoustic side. I think the mini toggles are to turn on/off the accoustic if it is a 2position. I have seen three way switshes that go: electric/both/acoustic it's a crap shoot
holLoWskull Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 A buddy of mine has a 96' T-51F. Simple 250K vol pot (magnetic pickups), a vol pot (I think it's a 1M pot, but it may be a 5M pot...I'm not 100% sure) for the piezo volume, no tone control. When I made my own T-51 F out of a regular T-51 I decided to go with a CTS stacked 250K/500K pot for piezo volume and magnetic pickup tone (I too think it's odd to have a Tele-esque guitar without a tone control). I believe his stock T-51F has a 3-way mini toggle switch (probably ON/OFF/ON), and I wired mine the same way (magnetic pickups only/both/piezo only). I would imagine that since there is no 9V battery in a stock T-51F you'd want to use a DI that has a way to increase signal gain for best sound quality? I use a LR Baggs Para acoustic DI to boost the signal (and shape the tone) on all my non-powered piezo guitars, it works well.
peedenmark7 Posted June 21, 2011 Author Posted June 21, 2011 Stereo jack is factory. All pots appear factory as well. I may rip all this piezo crap out of the guitar and wire it up like a stock tele utilizing the Wilki bridge that I got from Matt. [thanks again]Seems without a preamp this is a waste of a feature anyway ?After some lengthy time emailing and yapping on the phone with fishman, the tech that rewired the new bridge added all kinds of funky resistors and caps which according to the guy @ fishman makes no sense. My seller conveniently forgot to put the Y cable in the case so I cant even test this thing as it is wired... But it seems the 5 meg is controlling the mags at this time... the 250k push pull is non functional..It would have made more sense to have a stacked 250k pot for volume and a push/pull for some tone control, and if available a stacked 5 meg pot for the piezo volume/ mute or defeat.that or a tiny kill switch mini toggle... Seems Hamers idea was no more user friendly than Charvels ?Without the optional battery operated preamp I need a Y cable, and even then I cant run both the piezo and mags into one amp? it would be an either/or unless I was sending the piezo directly to a PA , correct? This is new to me, and i am a little bummed as it seems I cant do what I thought I could with it.was hoping to blend the two signals in one clean amp.Rather than a Y cable could I cheat and use a stereo cable and then wire up both hots to a non stereo 1/4" male on one end so as to be able to get both signals into one input on the amp ? or am I approaching this from the wrong angle all together ?
