Yes, I have tried (and own) both mentioned pickups. As typical of Rio Grande pickups you'll find yourself using the volume knob more often (as in you actually get distinct useful tones out of Rios from 1-4, 5-8, and 9-10). The Hot Rails registers a higher resistance on a multi-meter, but the Railgunner is no slouch (the one I have measures around 13.2K) Head to head impression...both pickups sound good with gain, but the Rio can actually be used in lower gain situations too and still sound good. Overall it has a fuller sound. YMMV
