Recently I had a cheapy little 12-fret to the body L- size Recording King guitar jump into my lap and refuse to leave. It's a great little fingerpicker and has the kind of strong midrange you'd expect from a 30's to 40's era guitar, almost dobro-esque in tone.
Aside from a little of the usual setup work on the nut and bridge saddle, it was ready to go right away. However, its weak point appears to be the tuners. They're the individual plate, open gear type with plastic buttons, each one held on with two teensy screws. Something like the individual Waverlys would be a suitable replacement, but that seems like way overkill in terms of expense for this thing. I'd like to keep the stealth "killer el cheapo" vibe with a little better tuning stability. Any suggestions?
