Partial paint jobs...

Why do some painters use materials other than nitrocellulose, on older, originally nitro' finishes, when refinishing? Especially, when they only do a partial refinish, i.e. top? Is it not best to use as similar a product possible? With future aging, etc.? And better match? Just wondering.

For a full refin (not partial) where resale isn't really a concern I have had some folks who didn't want the refin. to age/check/yellow specifically request something other than nitrocellulose.

Same here, some of my customers don't want it to start checking and discolouring 10 years down the line and in fact my Dangermouse Nocturne that i finished in nitro in 2006 has already started to yellow off changing the colour from blue to green.

@stike & jem- I can understand the request. But on old school geetars? And when just doing the top, for example. I would stick with nitro, assuming it'll blend nicely during the life of the instrument. And isn't nitro easy to work with?

I did specify full and not partial refins where resale value Isn't a factor. When doing a partial like just a top then yeah using the same material that's already there is a must, bound tops maybe not so much.

Nitro easier? It blushes ( turns milky ) in high humidity so with non stop thunderstorms for the past 2 days I haven't been able to spray any whereas I havent had any issues shooting catalyzed urethane or polyester.
