Unbalanced and thin, sounded like somebody opened a drain plug and siphoned the tone out of the guitar, and BRIGHT. Did it once 20+ years ago and have never done again.

^^^ Yep. Magnetic pickups rely on the strings' magnetic properties for signal strength and tone. Acoustic guitars rely on string mass and downforce. That's why they're usually wrapped in bronze. Bronze is heavy yet flexible and relatively easy on the fingers besides, which is handy because you have to press harder with an acoustic than an electric.
